Posting from my phone on the way back to the apartment after two consecutive evacuations - first from our section of town and then from Colleen’s where we’d been for about ten minutes (they’re higher up from the water) before a wider evacuation.
So far it doesn’t look as bad as other spots - does anyone know how they’re doing in Bennington? The Bridge of Flowers...

We've Got A Diem to Carpe: Today. →

I started off bright, cheery and excited. I greeted my students at the door with a pencil and a plastic bag filled with cut up sentence strip that when put together was a short letter from me to them expressing my excitement for the year. Then, it just went downhill.
We tried playing a name game,…

It turns out that I am not allowed to have a blog...
So, if you heard that I was working for a particular service organization, Jedi mind trick all, you totally never heard that.
But if you did, and you ever have any questions about it, please by all means ask, and I will answer privately or through emails.
It’s a shame that I cannot discuss certain things while still noting what I do. I just suppose that I’ll have to keep this...

So, I’ve brought a folder of student work from a couple of years ago that resulted from a lesson plan I really need to revisit and revamp, and I’m going to make that happen. I’ll bring home a few more when I head back to MA (I’m back in NY for the weekend).
Then, I’ll start on one of my education books and see what grabs me.
And when I have regular internet access...

Incredibly grateful for my behind-the-scenes...
Nothing makes you feel quite so off about not working in a school quite like walking through a Dollar Tree in August. Classroom and teacher supplies everywhere.
(Quotes because I know they aren’t my kids, but in a way, they always are.)

When a student has a birthday at school, give them the best gift you can as a teacher. Tell them that they can take any book off your classroom library shelf to keep. Most of your students will have a favorite book from your classroom library and why shouldn’t we let them have it?
If you are a…

Best Clock Ever? I think so. →
This is going to find its way into my classroom someday.
The best thing about this is that, if you’re a little bit crafty, you can make sure your students are learning while they’re staring at that clock.
Just visit your local craft store for a clock apparatus or kit and a round piece of wood or, alternatively, a piece of white laminated plastic cut accordingly. You can paint the...

Update 2: Apartment fiasco
My original prospective housemate turned out not to be the best choice for me, and my service organization helped me find a fellow member who seems pretty great. She and I are going to be “grad school application buddies” — she’s actually applying to the same program in NH I’d been considering before I saw it couldn’t place me in schools, and we’re going...
Update 1:
When I inquired about SNAP with one of my supervisors, her response was, “I highly recommend them.” She actually prepares letters in advance every year for her workers to verify their allowance and need.
One relief checked off.

My living allowance is small enough that I could...
If I’m honest with myself, I can admit that I’m going to need it.
But I literally chose to be in this position. I signed up for a program that, in its contract, says I cannot pursue outside work. I signed up knowing that I would be receiving a living allowance that had me sitting close to the poverty line, or firmly below it, depending on whether a program measures before or after...
