Things my colleagues need to realize:

chrysaoura:

If you do not create explicit safe spaces for LGBT students, you do not have an equitable educational environment.

If you do not affirm and support the identity of LGBT students the same way you support religious, racial, ability, or class identity in your classroom, you do not have an equitable educational environment.

If you allow students who hold heterosexist or cissexist views— even if it’s for cultural reasons—  equal voice as LGBT students on topics pertaining to sexual orientation and gender identity in the classroom, you do not have an equitable educational environment.

If you are more worried about protecting the feelings of parents (or yourself from the feelings of parents) than affirming and supporting the identity of LGBT students, you do not have an equitable educational environment.

The purpose of schooling is to give students the tools to participate fully in a democratic society. Everything we teach— math, science, history, ELA, language, social justice— should challenge the assumptions and teachings every student has walking into the classroom regardless of their cultural background. If you are not clearly supporting LGBT students, you are failing them as an authority figure and implicitly supporting heterosexism and cissexism. Heterosexism and cissexism lead to violence against LGBT students.
