When someone equates school spirit with “tribalism” and “defeating the Other,” and I’m just like:

I can kind of see how they might extrapolate that, if they were coming at it from a certain mindset.  HOWEVER.

School bonding is important to student achievement, and having pride in one’s self and one’s community is not only part of school bonding but independently positively linked to student achievement as well.

So…yes, some of us may have hated sitting through pep rallies in high school, but activities that really do encourage pride in one’s school community are good things.
